The original ‘Twinned with Narnia’ sign appeared in the summer of 2005 when someone customised one of the signs in Totnes. It has since entered local folklore.
Thanks to Leo Trimming who provided the above picture.
The header of this website uses a photograph from 2012 when the sign was amended again.
I used the phrase ‘Twinned with Narnia’ in the title of my thesis and have used it in some talks since. Some local people object to the phrase and the idea that it represents Totnes as a ‘wacky’ and out there place. Although I am in a very small way reproducing and recirculating this place image, hopefully my work as a whole reveals the complexity of its alternative side.
